Over the years, Jay has played in a number of other bands. None of which have become HALF as respected or well-known as his long run in the lineup of... BAD RELIGION. Jay knew BR Frontmen, Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz, from Highschool. They were part the way through recording the self-titled EP, released in 1980, when Jay approached them, asking if they needed a guitarist. "We've got a guitarist" they said, "We need a bassplayer". So Jay said "OK" and went and bought himself a bass guitar. Well, already being a guitarist, he thought it was really easy and apparantly learnt to play it in about 10 minutes. So on that first BR EP, about 2-3 songs were done without a bass (before Jay joined) and the other couple were done with him in the fold. Jay continued to play with the band: next (in 1982) came BR's debut album, titled "How Could Hell be Any Worse?", which reached much acclaim and still stands today as a landmark record in LA Punk history. Most of the original lineup (including Jay) dispersed part the way into recording their 2nd full album (in 1983) called "Into The Unknown". It was a synthesized non-punk record, written by vocalist, Greg Graffin and guitarist, Greg Hetson. The members who quit (Brett, Jay and Pete Finestone) didn't really take well to it- it's very different to any other BR material! So for that album, Greg G got in some old friends (Tim Gallegos, Paul Dedona and Davy Goldman) to fill in on the other instruments (Gallegos was on bass). With that varied lineup, BR also did a 1984 EP, called "Back To The Known", which WAS Punk and a great comeback! Eventually, in 1987, Greg Hetson called up all the original members and organised some practice sessions. With that great lineup (Greg G, Brett, Greg H, Jay, Pete) back in gear, they released the 1988 landmark Punk album, "Suffer". Despite the lineup changes which have happened, Jay has stayed in the band (he's been a part of BR for over 21 years!) They've released many albums- they are the best band in the world!! |
